Have you noticed how your skin becomes dull or feel a little off a series of holiday parties, and BBQs? Well, I do, and I hate that. I am sure many of us can say that what we eat really reflects much on our skin health (and overall health actually).
“What you eat affects your skin—for better or worse,” says Ariel Ostad, MD, fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Don’t think, however, that a few indulgences will age you overnight. It is a continuously poor diet that can accelerate the aging process of your skin (and teeth) over time.
Watch out for the following food. They will wear your skin out and make it look dull and older than your actual age.
Personally, when my skin turns out pretty dull after a series of bar hopping during a long holiday, I know I have alcohol to blame for that.
For starters, good liver health, also means good skin health. And when we drink too much alcohol, we compromise our liver’s health. “When your liver is functioning well, toxins that could potentially affect the skin are expelled naturally through your body,” says Dr. Ostad. “But if toxins build up in your liver, and aren’t broken down properly, your skin can develop a variety of issues, like acne, sallowness, and wrinkles.” Drinking can also trigger rosacea outbreaks.
To top it off, alcohol is dehydrating and bad for your sleep, which was associated with accelerated aging in a Case Western Reserve University study. “Inadequate sleep is linked to wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and reduced skin elasticity,” says Dr. Ostad.
