CNN administered an online poll asking readers to rank which destination has the world’s best food. Taiwan emerged as No.1, and the Philippines followed at No.2.
However, the Malaysian chef seemed to be a bit disappointed with the result of the poll after Malaysia was placed on the sixth spot! According to Chef Wan, Malaysia should be on the top rank and the Philippines should be placed on the bottom part of the list.
“I see food as varieties and flavors that reflect the culture and food, and that is why Malaysia should be the first world’s best food destination.” Chef Wan said in an interview.
Taiwan garnered 8,242 votes which made it reach the highest place on the poll, followed by the Philippines which had a total of 1,528 votes.
“Philippines is known to have the worst food in Asia, ask any chefs and they will tell you I am right,” Chef Wan added.
Well, preferences are culturally conditioned (are you familiar with “cultural smell” — Filipinos smell like fish, Arabs smell like onions, etc.) We have a collective sense of ‘normal’ rendering anything outside our culture of the normal (that is of the same typology such as smell or food preference) as odd or weird or simply.. different! So, stop the hate. It’s all about taste, and culture has a lot to do with it.
