Reboiling Water is Hazardous to our Health


It is our common practice to boil water for health purposes, but boiling the same water again can cause chemical reactions that could be a source of diseases, or worse some types of cancer.“If you boil the water too long or reboil it, you risk concentrating certain undesirable chemicals that may be in your water,”said Dr. Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D., Chemist. Some harmful substances are effectively removed when water was boiled and after it cools it must not be reboiled.

Health professionals have concerns about reboiled water which can cause certain types of cancer. Chemicals like nitrates, arsenic and fluoride becomes more concentrated during this process that is harmful to our wellbeing. Furthermore, concentration of other mineral like for instance of calcium salt can lead to development of kidney stones. However, the most hazardous chemicals are the three which is mentioned earlier. Here are the explanations into what makes these chemicals risky to our health.


Boiling water produces nitrates, and in the act of reboiling it the nitrates in the water are reheated. This heat efficiently change nitrates into nitrosamines which is a carcinogenic. Studies show that nitrosamines are harmful to both humans and animals. Conversely, nitrosamines are added into processed food as a form of preservative overlooking its negative effect.

This institute also recommends contacting local health department for methods of reducing arsenic levels in drinking water. Like for instance, if drinking from private well, a state certification officer can provide a list of laboratories that will perform tests on drinking water. It is strongly recommended to have water well tested at least once a year to avoid and lessen harmful effects.

A study released by the National Academy of Sciences on 1999 shows that arsenic specifically on drinking water causes bladder, lung and skin cancer. Also, the said substance is one of the factors which cause kidney and liver cancer. This same study also shows that arsenic is harmful to the central peripheral nervous systems specifically damages heart and blood vessels, and causes skin damage.


Similar to the case of arsenic, fluoride cannot be removed from water through boiling it. The effect of reboiling it is also the same; it increases the chemical’s concentration levels and boosts its adverse effect to physical conditions. Nowadays, many local governments continue to add measured doses of fluoride to

water supplies. Its purpose is to reduce the risk of dental decay even though there are studies stating effects on doing this common practice. One of these studies is the frequently cited study on the harmful effects of fluoride that was conducted in Harvard University, the researchers determined a parallel link between increased levels of fluoride and cognitive destruction. In addition, the National Institutes of Health’s study concluded that children living in areas with highly fluoridated water had lower IQ’s than
